Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (AKA CHIPP™)

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® has a strong history of supporting and servicing families, for we understand a healthy family is the foundation of a healthy community.  We will take a multi-generational approach to fortify families within our communities by addressing child hunger and promoting positive youth development and leadership, mental well-being and senior life.

Childhood Hunger Initiative Power Pack (CHIPP™)

CHIPP™ provides weekend and holiday meals for children within local communities and is targeted to be Alpha Kappa Alpha’s most ambitious childhood hunger program to date.

Epsilon Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® launched the CHIPP™ Program at the Women’s League Child Development Center located in Hartford in

November, 2022. The program is designed to offer a supply of weekend meals and snacks free of charge.  Each Friday, children enrolled in the program receive an environmentally friendly bag filled with 2 breakfast, 2 lunch, and 2 snack items for their weekend meals.  All food items are non-perishable.  Holiday and extended breaks include food items for the days the center is closed.

Alpha Kappa Alpha members are committed to the 4-year 40-week program. Members fill the Power Packs and deliver them to the children every Friday.  The Epsilon Omicron Omega Chapter has received recognition from CT Foodshare for its commitment in assisting to alleviate hunger in Hartford.  The Chapter also received the top award for the CHIPP™ Program from the North Atlantic Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® for the implementation of CHIPP™ and partnerships formed with CT Foodshare and Union Baptist Church.

In the four months since the program’s inception, members have packed and distributed 514 Power Packs with 1,563 food items.   Plans to expand the program include a year long program,  nutritional workshops for parents, and Foodshare resources for additional food assistance for families.
