Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are a jewel in the cap of American higher education particularly among families of color. The contributions these schools make to the fabric of American life are indisputable. HBCUs, through their spirit and their numerous programs and services, are especially significant to African American families everywhere. These institutions are models of perseverance, hard work, quality instruction, meaningful research and service to their communities, which is a major cornerstone of the American family.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC – a historically black university. Support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) remains a priority as Alpha Kappa Alpha continues its focus on education with an emphasis on HBCUs.
Epsilon Omicron Omega will create opportunities for African American students to learn and gain awareness of HBCUs. Past events include:
Think HBCU Alumni Panel: This event featured four panelists who were alumni from HBCUs – Hampton University, Tuskegee University, Howard University, and Spelman College. These panelists spoke about their HBCU experience and answered questions from the audience. This event also featured a presentation on financial aid and scholarships.
Greater Hartford Think HBCU College Fair: This event had over 300 participants that represented more than 200 students from 61 schools in the greater Hartford area. There nine participating HBCUs which included Hampton University, Howard University, Spelman College, Johnson C. Smith University, West Virginia State University, Tuskegee University, Dillard University, Morgan State University and Virginia State University along with scholarship and leadership opportunities presented by the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, INROADS, and other local community organizations.
